President of the General Assembly meets with the Speaker of the Senate of Canada


The President of the General Assembly, H.E. Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser, met with the Honourable Noel Kinsella, Speaker of the Canadian Senate. President Al-Nasser outlined the four main focus areas he has identified for the 66th Session of the General Assembly, namely, Mediation for the Peaceful Settlement of Disputes, Sustainable Development and Global Prosperity, Improving Disaster Prevention and Response, and UN Reform.

Dr. Kinsella commended President Al-Nasser on the Informal Meeting on Mediation that he hosted on Wednesday 9 November 2011. He said that it will help promote Mediation as a promising tool of peaceful resolution of disputes.

They also exchanged views on the upcoming International Parliamentary Union (IPU) event to be hosted by the General Assembly at the end of this month.

 

President Al-Nasser meets with the President of the Economic and Social Council and members of the ECOSOC Bureau



The President of the General Assembly, H.E. Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser met with H.E. Lazarous Kapambwe, Permanent Representative of Zambia to the United Nations, in his capacity as President of the Economic and Social Council and members of the (ECOSOC) Bureau.

The President and the Bureau of ECOSOC briefed President Al-Nasser on two upcoming events to be hosted by the Council, namely, a special event on Cyber Security in December 2011 and a meeting on Philanthropy, under the theme of youth employment, in late February 2012.

The two Presidents exchanged views on the strengthening of ECOSOC. They also discussed the central role of the General Assembly and ECOSOC in ensuring the success of next year's UN Conference on Sustainable Development - Rio +20 - which is expected to serve as an important platform for the post-MDGs or post-2015 development agenda.
