Meeting of the President of the General Assembly with His Majesty, the King of Belgium
The President of the General Assembly, H.E. Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser is on a four-day official visit to Belgium. President Al-Nasser has had an audience with His Majesty the King of Belgium, Albert II, at the Royal (Laken) Palace in Brussels.
Meetings with Senior Belgian officials
During this visit to Brussels, President Al-Nasser also held talks with H.E. Didier Reynders, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and European Affairs. He also met with Mr. Andre Flahaut, President of the Chamber of Representatives and Baroness de Bethune, President of the Senate of the Federal Parliament of Belgium.
Meeting with H.E. Jose Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission
During the visit to Belgium, President Al-Nasser also held talks with the President of the European Commission, H.E. Jose Manuel Barroso. They discussed the situation in Syria, the High Level Meeting on the State of the World Economy that the President of the General Assembly plans to convene in May 2012, and the thematic debate at the GA on improving disaster prevention and response to be hosted by President Al-Nasser in April 2012.
Meeting with the H.E. Herman Van Rompuy, President of the European Council
Still in Brussels, Belgium, President Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser held talks with H.E. Herman Van Rompuy, President of the European Council. Their talks focused on EU-UN relations, the latest developments in Syria, sustainable development, preparations for Rio+20 and UN Revitalization and Reform.
President Al-Nasser commended the active role being played by the European Union and its Member States in the UN.
Meeting with the European Commissioner for Climate Action and the Deputy Secretary General of the European External Action Service
The President of the General Assembly also held talks with Ms. Connie Hedegaard, European Commissioner for Climate Action. They exchanged views on the preparations for the upcoming UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) to be held in Brazil in June 2012. President Al-Nasser welcomed the ambitious target of the EU to become energy-efficient and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by the year 2020. He briefed Ms. Hedegaard on the Thematic Debate on the “Road to Rio and Beyond” that he intends to organize in April 2012.
President Al-Nasser also met with Mrs. Helga Schmid, Deputy Secretary-General of the European External Action Service. The talks focused on the situation in Syria and the Middle East peace process. They exchanged views on the theme of mediation and the High Level Meeting on Mediation that the President of the General Assembly intends to convene on the 22nd of May, 2012
