President of the General Assembly meets with Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency
The President of the General Assembly H.E. Mr. Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser met with Mr. Yokiya Amano, Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). They exchanged views on the Agency’s work including its technical cooperation program. President Al-Nasser commended Mr. Amano’s leadership of the Agency, in particular with regard to the prompt and effective IAEA response during and in the aftermath of the Fukushima Daiichi disaster.
The President of the General Assembly noted that Improving Disaster Prevention and Responses is one of his key focus areas. He referred to the successful conclusion of the High-Level Meeting on Nuclear Safety and Security which reflected that a wide majority of participants commended the adoption of the IAEA Plan of Action on Nuclear Safety and entrusted the Agency with leading the way in supporting its full and effective implementation.
The President expressed his hope that the IAEA Forum, convened later this month by the Director-General in accordance with a General Conference decision adopted in 2000, will be successful in examining lessons of relevance to the establishment of a Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone in the Middle East.
The President and the Director-General agreed to continue their consultation on issues of mutual interest between the Agency and the General Assembly.
