Meeting with the President of the Security Council
The President of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Joseph Deiss, met with H.E. Sir Mark Lyall Grant, Permanent Representative of the United Kingdom to the United Nations in his capacity as the current President of the Security Council for the month of November 2010.
Both Presidents discussed a number of important issues, focusing mainly on Sudan on the Middle East conflict. President Deiss was briefed on the efforts and practical steps taken to improve the working methods of the Security Council. In the context of the upcoming report of the Security Council to the General Assembly, the two Presidents noted the importance of further strengthening the coordination and interaction between the General Assembly and the Security Council.
The President of the General Assembly holds regular meetings with the Presidents of the Principal Organs of the United Nations, as provided for in the relevant resolutions of the General Assembly, to ensure enhanced cooperation and coordination in their work programmes in accordance with their respective responsibilities under the Charter.
Meeting with the Director General of the Food and Agriculture Organization
Continuing his meetings with Heads of United Nations entities, the President of the General Assembly met with Mr. Jacques Diouf, Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Mr. Diouf thanked President Deiss for the remarks the President of the General Assembly delivered on 4 November at the World Food Day event in New York. They discussed the work of FAO, agriculture and food production, in particular the importance of investment in infrastructure and rural development, as well as the impact of natural disasters on agriculture and food security.
Meeting with the President of the Trade and Development Board
The President of the General Assembly met with H.E. Mr. Luis Manuel A. Piantini Munnigh, Permanent Representative of the Dominican Republic to the World Trade Organization and Economic Organizations in Geneva, in his capacity as the President of the Trade and Development Board (TBD). The Board manages the work of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the principal organ of the United Nations General Assembly dealing with trade, investment, and development issues.
