Meeting with the President of the Security Council
The President of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Joseph Deiss, met with H.E. Mr. Ertuğrul Apakan, Permanent Representative of Turkey to the United Nations in his capacity as the current President of the Security Council for the month of September 2010.
They held discussions on a number of important issues on the agenda of the Security Council and the General Assembly. The President of the Security Council informed the President of the General Assembly on the outcome of the two high-level meetings of the Security Council on the maintenance of peace and security and counter-terrorism. Both Presidential Statements refer to the need for a strong partnership between the Security Council and the General Assembly in addressing these issues. Among other items discussed were the situation in Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sierra Leone, Sudan and the Middle East.
The two Presidents also underlined the importance of a close and continuous dialogue between the Presidents of these two Principal Organs.
The President of the General Assembly holds regular meetings with the Presidents of the Principal Organs of the United Nations, as provided for in the relevant resolutions of the General Assembly, to ensure enhanced cooperation and coordination in their work programmes in accordance with their respective responsibilities under the Charter.
