THE PRESIDENT OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY

President Deiss meets with the President of the Economic and Social Council and with the members of the ECOSOC bureau
The President of the United Nations General Assembly, H. E. Joseph Deiss, met with H. E. Mr. Lazarous Kapambwe, Permanent Representative of Zambia to the United Nations, in his capacity as President of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), with the members of the ECOSOC bureau, which is constituted of the Permanent Representatives of Bangladesh, Belgium, Peru and Slovakia, and with members of the ECOSOC Secretariat.
The President of the General Assembly and the President of the ECOSOC and the bureau members exchanged views on a number of important issues on the agenda of the two bodies, including global governance, system-wide coherence and peacebuilding. In particular, the President of the ECOSOC gave an update of the preparation of the substantive session of the ECOSOC, which will take place in Geneva, from 4 to 29 July 2011. President Deiss informed that he intends to participate in the high-level segment of this session, which will focus on education. The President of the General Assembly informed about the follow up of resolution 61/16 and the review of the implementation of this resolution. The President and the bureau members of ECOSOC also had a very informal exchange of views on global economic governance, the roles of the ECOSOC.
The President of the General Assembly holds regular meetings with the Presidents of the Principal Organs of the United Nations, as provided for in the relevant resolutions of the General Assembly, to ensure enhanced cooperation and coordination in their work programmes in accordance with their respective responsibilities under the Charter.
