President Deiss meets with the President of the Economic and Social Council
The President of the United Nations General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Joseph Deiss, met with H.E. Mr. Lazarous Kapambwe, Permanent Representative of Zambia to the United Nations, in his capacity as President of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
The President of the General Assembly and the President of the Economic and Social Council exchanged views on a number of important issues on the agenda of the two bodies, including global governance, system-wide coherence and peacebuilding. President Deiss and President Kapambwe highlighted the role of the Secretary-General as well as that of the General Assembly and ECOSOC in strengthening the involvement of the United Nations in global economic governance. They underlined the need to accelerate the achievement of Millennium Development Goals by 2015. They also discussed the upcoming United Nations Conference on Least Developed Countries in Istanbul.
The President of the General Assembly holds regular meetings with the Presidents of the Principal Organs of the United Nations, as provided for in the relevant resolutions of the General Assembly, to ensure enhanced cooperation and coordination in their work programmes in accordance with their respective responsibilities under the Charter.
