President Deiss official visit to Italy

H.E. Mr. Joseph Deiss, President of the sixty-fifth session of the United Nations General Assembly, participated, at the invitation of the Italian government, in the conference on "Global Governance and Security Council Reform" that took place in Rome on 16 May. In his opening remarks, President Deiss called for the beginning of real negotiations and underlined that he is available and willing to move forward with Member States on the issue of Security Council reform. On the margins of the conference, the President of the General Assembly had bilateral meetings with the Deputy Prime Ministers and Foreign Ministers of Croatia, Kuwait and Malta, the Foreign Ministers of Argentina, Egypt, Mexico and Pakistan as well as with the Deputy Foreign Ministers of China, Colombia and the Republic of Korea.

Later in the afternoon, President Deiss also visited the headquarters of the World Food Programme and met with its Executive Director Ms. Josette Sheeran. Finally, he also met with the Mayor of Rome, Mr. Gianni Alemanno.

On 17 May, the President of the General Assembly met with the Prime Minister of Italy, H.E. Mr. Silvio Berlusconi, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Mr. Franco Frattini. Topics discussed included the G20 and the UN, Security Council reform, the situation in Libya, Egypt, Tunisia, Syria and the Israeli-Palestinian peace process as well as the upcoming High-level meetings of the General Assembly on HIV/AIDS and Youth.

The President of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Senator Lamberto Dini, and the Vice President of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Chamber of Deputies, Honourable Franco Narducci, hosted a luncheon in honour of the President of the General Assembly with a number of senators and members of the Chamber of Deputies. This was followed by a joint meeting with the Foreign Relations Committees of both the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies.

While in Rome, President Deiss also met with H.E. Archbishop Dominique Mamberti, Secretary for the Holy See's Relations with States. Topics discussed included the upcoming major events in the General Assembly, the dialogue among civilizations and the situation of religious minorities.
