President Deiss meets with the President of the Security Council
The President of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Joseph Deiss, met with H.E. Mr. Ivan Barbalić, Permanent Representative of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the United Nations, in his capacity as the current President of the Security Council for the month of January 2011.
Both Presidents discussed a number of important issues, focusing mainly on Côte d’Ivoire, Haiti, Somalia, Sudan, and the Middle East. On Côte d’Ivoire, both Presidents expressed their deep concern about the deteriorating situation on the ground. They condemned attacks against civilians, United Nations personnel as well as peacekeepers by forces and supporters loyal to Mr. Laurent Gbagbo.
The two Presidents noted the importance of further strengthening the coordination and interaction between the General Assembly and the Security Council.
The President of the General Assembly holds regular meetings with the Presidents of the Principal Organs of the United Nations, as provided for in the relevant resolutions of the General Assembly, to ensure enhanced cooperation and coordination in their work programmes in accordance with their respective responsibilities under the Charter.
