President Deiss meets with the President of the Security Council;
Receives the Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme
United Nations Security Council
The President of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Joseph Deiss, met with H.E. Mr. Gérard Araud, Permanent Representative of France to the United Nations, in his capacity as the current President of the United Nations Security Council for the month of May 2011.
Both Presidents discussed a number of important regional issues, focusing mainly on Syria, Libya, Sudan, Somalia, Côte d’Ivoire, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. They also exchanged views on global governance, Security Council reform, and the thematic debates convened by the President of the General Assembly.
Ambassador Araud briefed President Deiss on the Programme of Work of the Security Council for the month of May, including the upcoming mission of the Council to Africa.
The two Presidents noted the importance of further strengthening the coordination and interaction between the General Assembly and the Security Council.
The President of the General Assembly holds regular meetings with the Presidents of the Principal Organs of the United Nations, as provided for in the relevant resolutions of the General Assembly, to ensure enhanced cooperation and coordination in their work programmes in accordance with their respective responsibilities under the Charter.

Later during the day, President Deiss had a meeting with Achim Steiner, Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
