President Deiss meets with High-level Representatives from the G4 Countries
The President of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Joseph Deiss, met today with H.E. Mr. Guido Westerwelle, Foreign Minister of Germany, H.E. Mr. Somanahalli Mallaiah Krishna, Minister of External Affairs of India, H.E. Mr. Takeaki Matsumoto, State Secretary for Foreign Affairs of Japan and H.E. Mrs. Vera Lúcia Barrouin Crivano Machado, Under Secretary-General for Political Affairs of Brazil.
The President of the General Assembly and the G4 High-level Representatives discussed Security Council reform. G4 High-level Representatives expressed their views on the reform process and they highlighted their wish to reach tangible results in the near future. With President Deiss, they concurred that this reform is part of the broader global governance agenda and that, for the credibility of the Organization, it is important to adapt the United Nations to the realities of today's world. President Deiss briefed the G4 High-level Representatives on the latest developments regarding intergovernmental negotiations on Security Council reform. He also briefed them on his participation in the African Union Summit, which took place in Addis Ababa, from 30 to 31 January 2011.
Stressing that Security Council reform is a process driven by Member States, President Deiss reiterated his availability to support the membership of the General Assembly in their efforts to progress on the issue.
