STATEMENT ATTRIBUTABLE TO THE SPOKESPERSON FOR
THE PRESIDENT OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY

President Deiss meets with the President of the Security Council;
the Prime Minister of Mozambique; and the Japanese State Secretary for Foreign Affairs.
The President of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Joseph Deiss, met with H.E. Mr. Noël Nelson Messone, Permanent Representative of Gabon to the United Nations, in his capacity as the current President of the Security Council for the month of June 2011.
Both Presidents discussed a number of important regional issues, including Syria, Libya, Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. They also discussed the cooperation between the two Organs regarding the appointment of the Secretary-General. The President of the General Assembly holds regular meetings with the Presidents of the Principal Organs of the United Nations, as provided for in the relevant resolutions of the General Assembly, to ensure enhanced cooperation and coordination in their work programmes in accordance with their respective responsibilities under the Charter.
On the margin of the High Level Meeting on HIV/AIDS, President Deiss met today with H.E. Mr. Aires Bonifacio Baptista Ali, Prime Minister of Mozambique. The Prime Minister briefed the President on Mozambique's efforts regarding the Millennium Development Goals as well as the measures undertaken in his country to combat HIV/AIDS. The President commended Mozambique for its contribution to peace initiatives in Southern Africa.
On the same day, President Deiss met with H.E. Mr. Yukata Banno, Japanese State Secretary for Foreign Affairs. They discussed important issues on the agenda of the sixty-fifth session of the General Assembly, focusing mainly on Security Council reform. The State Secretary expressed Japan's appreciation for the leadership of the President of the General Assembly.
