Official visit to Chile
The President of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Joseph Deiss, concluded today an official visit to Chile. President Deiss spoke at the opening and final session of a regional seminar on "The United Nations in Global Governance" which was organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Chile and the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC).
President Deiss underlined the need for more effective global governance and the role of the United Nations as the unique umbrella for the whole system of global governance due to its universality, unique legitimacy and its value-based nature. In order to play this role in the 21st century, President Deiss emphasized the need to reform the main bodies of the United Nations like the Security Council and the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
On the margins of the seminar, the President of the General Assembly met with the Executive Secretary of ECLAC, Ms. Alicia Bárcena. Topics discussed were the economic situation and regional integration in Latin America as well as the follow-up to the seminar on the United Nations and global governance. President Deiss also met the United Nations Resident Coordinator, Mr. Gary Stahl, who briefed him on the activities of the United Nations agencies in Chile.
With the Foreign Minister of Chile, H.E. Alfredo Moreno, President Deiss discussed issues related to global governance and Security Council reform. The President of the General Assembly also delivered remarks at a ceremony and press conference to launch the "Carbon Zero Programme" of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Chile. President Deiss also gave a speech on "The Role of the United Nations in the Current World" at the Diplomatic Academy of the Foreign Ministry
