President Deiss receives Chilean Foreign Minister Moreno
H.E. Mr. Joseph Deiss, President of the sixty-fifth session of the United Nations General Assembly, today in New York received H.E. Mr. Alfredo Moreno, the Foreign Minister of Chile.
President Deiss thanked Foreign Minister Moreno for Chile’s strong commitment to the work of the General Assembly, namely mentioning global governance and Chile’s role as a facilitator on the review of the implementation of General Assembly resolution 61/16 on the “Strengthening of the Economic and Social Council.”
The President of the General Assembly discussed with the Foreign Minister of Chile the concept of Responsibility to Protect as well as the situation in Libya and Côte d'Ivoire.
They also had a detailed exchange of views on the situation in Haiti. President Deiss underlined the importance of the strong commitment of Chile and other countries in the region to the work of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), where Chilean personnel have been deployed since the establishment of the mission in 2004.
President Deiss also thanked the Foreign Minister for the invitation by the Chilean Government to visit Chile. On that occasion, the President of the General Assembly will deliver a speech on global governance at the headquarters of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) in Santiago.
