President of the General Assembly Meeting with H.E. Ms. Tarja Halonen, President of the Republic of Finland
The President of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Joseph Deiss, today met with the President of Finland, H.E. Ms. Tarja Halonen. They discussed a wide range of issues on the agenda of the sixty-fifth session of the United Nations General Assembly.
The President of the General Assembly and the President of Finland reiterated their commitment for the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals. President Deiss congratulated President Halonen for having co-chaired the Millennium Summit in 2000.
The President of the General Assembly and the President of Finland expressed their interest in the work of the High-Level Panel on Global Sustainability, co-chaired by Ms. Halonen and H.E. Mr. Jacob Zuma, President of South Africa.
President Deiss and President Halonen also underlined the importance of global governance as a topical issue. Ms. Halonen spoke positively about the General Assembly decision to establish a United Nations Women agency. Both Presidents underlined the importance of women and gender issues for the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.
