Security Council Reform
Background
In accordance with decision 62/557, adopted on 15 September 2008, Member States commenced intergovernmental negotiations on Security Council reform in informal plenary of the General Assembly during the sixty-third session of the General Assembly.
With decision 63/565, passed on 14 September 2009, Member States decided to “immediately continue intergovernmental negotiations on Security Council reform in informal plenary of the General Assembly” during the sixty-fourth session as mandated by General Assembly decision 62/557.
With decision 64/568, passed on 13 September 2010, Member States decided to “immediately continue intergovernmental negotiations on Security Council reform in informal plenary of the General Assembly at its sixty-fifth session as mandated by General Assembly decisions 62/557.”
At the outset of the sixty-fifth session of the General Assembly, the President of sixty-fifth session of the General Assembly, His Excellency Mr. Joseph Deiss, appointed His Excellency Mr. Zahir Tanin, Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, as Chair of the intergovernmental negotiations.
