Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann was elected President of the United Nations General Assembly’s 63rd session on 4 June 2008. At the time of his election, he was serving as Senior Adviser on Foreign Affairs, with the rank of Minister, to President Daniel Ortega Saavedra of Nicaragua, a post which he has held since 2007.

Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann presided the General Assembly’s 63rd session from 16 September 2008 to 14 September 2009.

Priorities

The impact of the global food crisis on poverty and hunger in the world as well as the need to democratize the United Nations

"In addition to paying priority attention to the fight to eliminate hunger and poverty from the world and to democratize the United Nations," president H.E. Mr. Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann said in his acceptance speech, "we will pay very special attention to such issues as climate change, the energy crisis, terrorism, human rights, disarmament and nuclear control, the rights of women and children, and the preservation of biodiversity and cultural diversity. Of course, all of the other very important issues on the Organization’s agenda will also receive all the attention they deserve."
