International Widows’ Day

India: Forgotten Women

In India, millions of women are shunned from society when their husbands die. Excluded and marginalized, they face a life of poverty and injustice. Many live on the streets begging for a bite to eat. One woman, a widow herself, is working to change their lives - restoring dignity and human rights to these forgotten women. (UN in Action programme # 1318)

On International Widows’ Day, UN spotlights plight of millions of women worldwide

On the first International Widows' Day Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged societies to ease the hardship that widows endure when their husbands die by respecting their rights to such social entitlements as access to inheritance, land tenure, employment and other means of livelihood.
