Armenia

  The UN Office in Armenia organized the commemoration of the Day in close cooperation with the Ministry of Defence and the Armenian Peacekeepers Battalion which held a military parade followed by a police exercise. The UN Office Director addressed the gathering which was attended by government officials military officers, media UN agencies and civil society representatives. On the occasion of the Day, the Minister of Defence issued a decree according to which the most outstanding Armenian peacekeepers received awards, special gifts and certificates. Public information materials received from UN Headquarters were translated into Armenian and disseminated to the media and the public at large. --- Photos
   
 

Austria

 

  On 30 May, the United Nations Information Service in Vienna participated in the annual Blue Helmet Forum Austria, organized by the Austrian Blue Helmet Association. UNIS Director was one of the main speakers at the event which was also addressed by the Chief of General Staff of Austria. The audience included government and Ministry of Defence senior officials, representatives of Blue Helmets Associations from a number of troop-contributing countries, SHIRBRIG, media, peacekeeping experts and others. The leading Austrian daily Die Presse was present at the Forum and carried a major report on the event.

Bahrain



  UNIC Manama provided Bahrain's Ministry of Defence and the local media with hard and electronic copies of the Secretary General's message in English and Arabic along with a press release produced by DPI on the occasion of the Day and other public information materials relating to UN peacekeeping. Arrangements were made to promote a special web site in Arabic containing information and links relevant to the Day among schools and students. Brazil

  On 31 May, the Director of the UN Information Centre addressed a group of approximately 40 university students from Rio de Janeiro on the subject of UN peacekeeping. The meeting was organized at UNIC premises. The press release received from UNHQ and the statement issued by the Secretary-General on the occasion of the Day were made available in Spanish and English to the local media.
       
 

France



  A seminar on "UN peace operations: challenges and perspectives" was organized by RUNIC Brussels on 3 June in Caen in close cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Defence and the Caen Memorial. The UN Headquarters' "Surge in Peacekeeping" photo exhibit, produced in French by RUNIC, was on display at the event. A number of fact sheets and a flyer on UN peacekeeping operations were also produced in French and distributed.
       
 

Geneva



  The United Nations Information Service observed the day with a solemn ceremony which took place before the monument dedicated to UN staff who had lost their lives in the line of duty. The ceremony was opened by the Director-General of the UN Office in Geneva . UNTV covered the ceremony and made a 4-minute film which also included excerpts from the address of the Director-General and the President of the International Association of Soldiers of Peace. --- More
       
 

Ghana



  The UN Information Center in Accra worked closely with the Ghana Armed Forces and the Ghana Police Service to organize a flag-raising and wreath-laying ceremony. Information materials and the Secretary-General's message on the occasion were distributed to participants at the function, including the media and the diplomatic corps. --- More
       
 

India



  UN Information Center in New Delhi, in collaboration with the United Service Institution of India (Centre for United Nations Peacekeeping), organized the observance at the USI Auditorium on 27 May. The audience included prominent army officers, diplomats and journalists. UNIC distributed a press kit which included materials received from DPI. An exhibit on peacekeeping was also put up for the Day.
       
 

Iran



  The United Nations Information Centre in Tehran succeeded in placing the Secretary General's message on the occasion of International Day of UN Peacekeepers 2005 in two leading English-language dailies: "Kayhan International" and "Iran News". --- Clippings
       
 

Madagascar



  UNIC Antananarivo, in cooperation with the military school for senior army officers in Fiadanana Antananarivo, organized a conference. The UNIC Director and the Deputy Resident Coordinator made a presentation on UN peacekeeping. UN information materials on peacekeeping were distributed during the event.--- Photos
       
 

Nordic countries



  RUNIC Brussels translated the Secretary General's statement and the press release into five Nordic languages, posted them on the websites and disseminated them among the Nordic media. A special website for the observance containing information in the Nordic languages and in English and links relevant to the Day was also launched.
       
 

Paraguay



  UN Information Center in Asuncion observed the day on 15 June by inviting about 45 Paraguayan military and civilian officers who previously served in UN peacekeeping operations to share their experiences and pay tribute to those who lost their lives while serving the cause of peace. The function, which was widely covered by the local media, was also attended by government officials, media and civil society representatives. According to the Canal 2 online rating, a 36-minute live TV show from the event was viewed by up to 35,000 people.
       
 

Poland



  UNIC Warsaw , in cooperation with the Polish Association of the Veterans of the UN peacekeeping Operations and the UN Resident Coordinator's office in Warsaw , organized a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Warsaw and a posthumous medal ceremony at the Polish association of the Veterans of the UN Peacekeeping Operations. UNIC Warsaw prepared a press release in Polish language on the observance, distributed it to the media and placed the information on its home page.

Russian Federation



  On 30 May, the United Nations Information Centre in Moscow organized "a five o'clock " ceremony to mark the Day, and reflect on the history of UN peacekeeping and the current challenges facing the international community in the peace and security area. Among the participants were correspondents from ITAR-TASS and Interfax, Editor-in-Chief of "Tvoje Vremia" ("Your Time") magazine, a lecturer from the Diplomatic Academy and representatives of the Russian civil society. --- More --- Photos
       
  Zambia   On the 29th of May, Zambia joined the international community in observing and paying tribute to all the men and women who have served in the United Nations peace keeping operations for their high level of professionalism, dedication and courage, and to honor the memory of those who lost their lives in the cause of peace. In Zambia the minister of Defense honored 54 Zambian officers who died while
serving in the peacekeeping missions. Speaking during the commemoration at the church service, the minister described as enormous, Zambia's contribution to the United Nations peacekeeping operations. The minister further stated that Zambia had an obligation as a member state of the United Nations to ensure that peace prevailed in all parts of the world. UNIC-Lusaka issued the Secretary General's message on the international day of the United Nations peacekeepers as a press release. It was distributed to the electronic/print media, government, departments and NGO's DPI/2376: UN peace Operations was circulated, together with the secretary-General's message.
       
 

Zimbabwe



  The UN Information Center in Harare organized a photographic exhibition in collaboration with the Ministry of Defence and the National Gallery of Zimbabwe, highlighting Zimbabwean peacekeepers at work in various UN peacekeeping missions. The Ministry of Defence provided funding. Over 400 people attended the launch of the exhibit. The event was widely picked by both the electronic and print media. Reports were also carried by local radio and television stations. A newspaper supplement on this Day was also produced by UNIC. --- More
