UN Democracy Fund in Action: Strengthening the Democratic Transformation in Egypt
A conference held in Cairo in July 2011 and made possible by the UN Democracy Fund, UNDEF, discussed ways to strengthen the democratic transformation of Egypt. The session addressed in an open and informed manner the many challenges Egypt faces on its path to democracy, including the place of military and religious ideas in the future shape of the country's governance. It drew more than 100 participants from Egyptian civil society, political parties and academic institutions, with the mood veering from cautious optimism to concerned pessimism. Papers were presented by prominent Egyptian opinion leaders. The conference was organized by the Cairo Institute for Human Right Studies, which is also implementing an UNDEF-funded project on democracy and the rule of law.
