Observances

At United Nations Headquarters in New York, the observance of the International Day of Peace will be marked on Friday, 19 September 2008.

In the morning, a peace ceremony will be held on the front lawn of the Secretariat Building. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will be accompanied by Mrs. Ban Soon-taek, Mr. Miguel d’Escoto Brockmann, President of the 63rd Session of the General Assembly, Mr. Kiyo Akasaka, Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information, and several Messengers of Peace. They will be joined by 193 students holding the flags of the United Nations and each UN Member State. After ringing the Japanese Peace Bell, the Secretary-General will deliver his message and call upon UN Headquarters staff and people around the world to observe a minute of silence in the name of peace at noon, local time.

Several hundred middle and high school students will then assemble for the annual Student Observance at UN Headquarters. They will be connected via video conference with students from different countries in conflict areas where UN Peacekeeping Missions are present. Together with the Secretary-General and some of the Messengers of Peace, the students will discuss peace and human rights issues.
