DPAD, the UNDP Office in Jordan and the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation of Jordan (MOPIC) jointly organized an intensive training workshop on 7-10 April, 2014 in Amman. This workshop is part of capacity development activities on the use of a macro-micro modeling methodology to help policymakers in Jordan to carry out analyses of MDG financing strategies, other public policies, and external shocks.

The workshop was attended by participants representing the government of Jordan, who joined both hands-on sessions and the training presentations and plenary discussions. The government was represented by experts from the MoPIC, the Department of Statistics (DOS) and the Central Bank of Jordan (CBJ). An economist from the UNDP country office in Jordan collaborated with UN-DESA/DPAD and MoPIC in the implementation of the training activities.
The workshop had the following objectives:

  1. Continue with practical demonstrations that help explain the use of ISIM-MAMS (i.e., adding a dataset for Jordan and generating alternative scenarios).
  2. Transfer a dataset to apply MAMS for Jordan and a complete application of MAMS for Jordan.
  3. Using Jordan for MAMS, complete practical exercises by means of which policy simulations are generated in three (interrelated) blocks: a reduction of foreign aid and alternative mechanisms for budget adjustment, financing mechanisms for human development and infrastructure, and changes in subsidies/taxes and the impact on the government budget.
  4. Agree on the final next steps of the project, including the final workshop.

Current capacity development activities in Jordan are realized under the project "Strengthening Macroeconomic and Social Policy Coherence through Integrated Macro-Micro Modelling" at the request of the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation (MOPIC). At the request of the MoPIC, capacity development activities of this project started in Jordan with the organization of a scoping mission and first inception and training workshop, on 28-29 March 2012, in Amman.
