Costa Rica’s involvement in DPAD's capacity development activities started in 2006 with the participation in the project “Implications of Macroeconomic Policy, External Shocks and Social Protection Systems for Poverty, Inequality, and Social Vulnerability in Latin America and the Caribbean”. Capacity development activities aim at assessing the impact of existing economic and social policies, and at formulating and evaluating strategies that will help the country achieve the development goals.

The main national counterpart of DPAD in Costa Rica is the Ministry of National Planning and Economical Politics (MIDEPLAN). DPAD collaborates closely with the United Nations Development Program country office in Costa Rica and the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) for administrative support.
