Secretary General, Mr. Ban Ki-moon speaks in front of DESA

The Secretary-General visited the Department of Economic and Social Affairs on the first working day of the New Year.

Mr. Ban thanked DESA for its support throughout 2010, especially for all its hard work in advancing inclusive and sustainable development.

The Secretary-General presented some of his strategic priorities for 2011, which included continued action on sustainable development, the need to advance the negotiations on climate change; empowerment of women; strengthening the United Nations, and working with the member states in promoting human rights and accountability, and a safer and more secure world.

Mr. Ban closed by reiterating his personal thanks to Mr. Sha and the Department, noting that its role in addressing the world’s immense challenges and in strengthening development, is more important than ever.
