The award was received by Hon. Siopili Perez, Minister of Health and Titular Head,
Ulu-o-Tokelau, during the 12th Pacific Health Ministers Meeting, held in Rarotonga,
Cook Islands from 28 to 30 August 2017. (Government of Tokelau)

The Department of Health of Tokelau was among the six recipients of the 2017 World No Tobacco Day Awards from the Western Pacific, for passing Tokelau Smoke Free – 2020, a policy which targets December 2020 to no longer import any tobacco products into Tokelau. The policy also outlines a series of targets and actions both at national and local levels towards a tobacco-free Tokelau by 2020.

Every year, the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes people and institutions that have made outstanding contributions to the advancement of the policies and measures contained in the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control and its guidelines. There are six awardees from each WHO region and two recipients globally of the WHO Director-General Special Recognition Award.
