Regional Counter Terrorism Strategies

The transnational threat posed by terrorism requires a unified and coordinated response from Member States. United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT/UNCCT) with the UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy in Central Asia (UNRCCA) supports the Joint Plan of Action (JPoA) for the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy in Central Asia adopted by Central Asian States in 2011 which is now entering its third phase. Phase III has the following objectives: to assist in the development of national and regional counter-terrorism and prevention of violent extremism strategies and to strengthen Central Asian countries’ capacity to implement this strategy under the Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy and Joint Plan of Action through tailored capacity building assistance. As part of the activities for Phase III, UNOCT/UNCCT and UNRCCA envisaged a series of coordination meetings bringing together UN agencies and regional international organizations working on issues related to preventing violent extremism and counter-terrorism in Central Asia. A mapping of activities and organizations is being produced for better coordination and information sharing.

UNOCT/UNCCT project Supporting Regional Efforts of the G5 Sahel Countries to Counter Terrorism and Prevent Violent Extremism under the Integrated Assistance for Countering Terrorism Initiative is being implemented with UNOWAS and the G5 Sahel Secretariat. The project’s support has been essential to strengthen the region’s civilian counter-terrorism efforts and to support a multi-dimensional approach to the crisis in the region.
