Ambassador Yukiya Amano

Ambassador Yukiya Amano, Permanent Representative of Japan to the International Organizations in Vienna since 2005, has been designated Chairman of the first session of the Preparatory Committee for the 2010 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).

Ambassador Amano was Chairman of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in 2005-2006. He was previously the Director General for Arms Control and Scientific Affairs (2002) and Director General, Disarmament, Non-Proliferation and Science Department (2004) in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, which he joined in 1972. Ambassador Amano graduated in 1972 from Tokyo University’s Law Faculty. He also studied in France at the universities of Besancon and Nice, and is the author of several publications including “A Japanese View on Nuclear Disarmament” (2002) and “The Significance of the NPT Extension” (1996).
