Fourth United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries 30 May - 3 June 2011, Turkey

Informal Interactive Civil Society Hearing April 1, 2011

The General Assembly, by its resolution 65/171 of 20 December 2010, decided to convene the Fourth United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries from 9-13 May 2011 in Istanbul, Turkey, to, among other things, undertake a comprehensive appraisal of the implementation of the Programme of Action by the least developed countries and their development partners, and to formulate and adopt a renewed partnership between the least developed countries and their development partners.

In its resolution, the General Assembly invited the President of the General Assembly to organize, before the second session of the Intergovernmental Preparatory Committee, a day of informal interactive hearing with civil society actors, in consultation with Member States, in particular the least developed countries, the Bureau of the Intergovernmental Preparatory Committee, the civil society steering committee and the representatives of non-governmental organizations in consultative status with the Economic and Social Council.

The Informal interactive hearing will be held on Friday, 1 April 2011 in the ECOSOC Chamber at the United Nations Headquarters.

The list of speakers and invited participants was determined by the President of the General Assembly in consultation with the Bureau of the Intergovernmental Preparatory Committee, the civil society steering committee, the representatives of non-governmental organizations in consultative status with the Economic and Social Council and Member States.

The hearing, including the informal interactive panel sessions, will be open to the media and will be broadcast in-house by the United Nations Television, including to the media working area. A programme of media briefings and press conferences will be arranged.
