Under-Secretary-General and Special Adviser on Africa, Mr. Maged Abdelaziz and the President of the Pan African Youth Union, Ms. Francine Muyumba

The Under-Secretary-General and Special Adviser on Africa, Mr. Maged Abdelaziz, met with Ms. Francine Muyumba, the recently elected first female President of the Executive Committee of the Pan African Youth Union (PYU) on 14 August 2015, at his Office at the UN Secretariat in New York. The PYU represents African youth at the highest level with respect to the African Union, and is currently focused on addressing youth unemployment, particularly through the promotion of entrepreneurship.

In her discussion with the USG, Ms. Muyumba noted that 2016 will mark the 10th anniversary of the African Youth Charter and will provide an important opportunity to review and assess implementation of the Charter, as well as to identify ways in which to strengthen its implementation at the national and continental levels.

She also highlighted the important role of youth at all levels in the implementation of Africa’s transformative Agenda 2063 and its First 10-Year Implementation Plan, as well as for implementation of the global 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, as the youth will be the future leaders of the continent.

The Under-Secretary-General and Special Adviser on Africa, who personally participated in the drafting and adoption of the African Youth Charter in 2006 in his capacity as the Permanent Representative of Egypt at the time, reaffirmed the strong commitment of the Office of the Special Adviser on Africa and of the United Nations in general, to supporting the development of African youth in all areas.
