Conference on the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT), 2 to 27 July 2012
The first-ever UN Conference on the Arms Trade Treaty, starting on July 2, aims to agree on standards to regulate the international arms trade, making it harder for weapons to be diverted to conflict zones, illegal market and into the hands of terrorists, warlords, drug traffickers and criminal cartels. It is seen as the most important initiative ever regarding conventional arms regulation within the United Nations. A robust arms trade treaty can make a difference for millions of people confronted with insecurity, deprivation and fear.
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, 15 June
The World Health Organization estimates that 4 - 6 per cent of older persons worldwide have suffered from a form of elder abuse. Emerging research suggests that abuse, neglect and violence against older persons, both at home and in institutions, are much more prevalent than currently acknowledged. On 15 June, the whole world voices its opposition to the abuse and suffering inflicted to some of our older generations.
Sustainable peace for a sustainable future: 100-day countdown to the International Day of Peace
The International Day of Peace, marked every year on 21 September, gives us all a chance to reflect on the unconscionable toll — moral, physical, material — wrought by war. Those costs are borne not only by us today, but by future generations as well. In the context of the upcoming Rio +20 Conference, this year's theme "Sustainable Peace for a Sustainable Future" highlights the fact that there can be no sustainable future without a sustainable peace, and that sustainable peace must be built on sustainable development.

Security Council Committee Established Pursuant to Resolution 1540 (2004)
The United Nations Security CouncilResolution 1540 (2004) under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter, which affirms that the proliferation of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons and their means of delivery constitutes a threat to international peace and security. The resolution obliges States to refrain from supporting by any means non-State actors from developing, acquiring, manufacturing, possessing, transporting, transferring or using nuclear, chemical or biological weapons and their delivery systems.

International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade, 25 March
The transatlantic slave trade, often known as the triangular trade, connected the economies of three continents. It is estimated that between 15 to 20 million people, men, women and children, were deported from their homes and sold as slaves in the different slave trading systems. This year’s theme of "Honouring the Heroes, Resisters and Survivors" of the Transatlantic Slave Trade aims to pay tribute to the brave men and women who valiantly fought against the inhumane practices of slavery.
