UN Charter
The purposes, principles and structure of the Organization are outlined in the 111 Articles of the United Nations Charter, adopted unanimously 25 June 1945.
Principal Organs of the UN
The United Nations Charter established the Organization's six principal organs:
- the General Assembly (the GA President is elected once a year);
- the Security Council (Presidency rotates monthly)
- the Economic and Social Council (its President is elected once a year)
- the Trusteeship Council
- the International Court of Justice and
- the Secretariat, headed by the Secretary-General.
Member States
The United Nations comprises a total of 193 Member States. Its membership has grown almost fourfold (from 51 Member States) since 1945.
UN Peacekeeping
Since 1948, more than 60 peacekeeping and observer missions have been deployed around the world by the United Nations.

Since the creation of the United Nations more than 80 former colonies have gained their independence.
