Top UN envoy in Sudan welcomes deal to end deadly clashes in disputed town
16 May – The top United Nations official in Sudan today welcomed the agreement to end the deadly fighting between Government forces and the former southern rebels in the disputed Abyei area, which has forced thousands of civilians to flee this week. FULL STORY >>

‘Encouraging’ progress on peace and security in Central Africa – Ban Ki-moon
15 May – Improved political dialogue in the Central African Republic (CAR), a peace conference in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), as well as the deployment of a United Nations peacekeeping mission in Chad and CAR are all signs of progress towards peace in the region, the Secretary-General said today. UN refugee agency begins overland return operation from Zambia to DR Congo
14 May – The United Nations refugee agency has expanded its repatriation operation to the town of Moba in south-eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) by launching road returns this week from Zambia. FULL STORY >>

UNICEF feeds 44,000 displaced Somali children

Much bigger aid effort needed for Myanmar – Ban Ki-moon
14 May – Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called for a much greater mobilization of resources and aid workers in Myanmar to respond to the devastation caused by Cyclone Nargis, which has left at least 38,000 dead and more than 27,000 others missing since it swept through the country earlier this month. Ban Ki-moon ‘deeply disappointed’ at continuing violence in Darfur
