Background Information:

From 26 June to 7 July 2006, representatives from governments, international and regional organizations and civil society will meet at the United Nations Headquarters to review the efforts and progress made to Prevent, Combat and Eradicate the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons in All Its Aspects.

By adopting the UN Programme of Action in 2001, the UN member States committed to collecting and destroying illegal weapons, adopting and/or improving national legislations that would help criminalize the illicit trade in small arms, setting strict import and export controls and taking action against violators of such laws. Five years after, it is time to review what has been made and to assess challenges on the road ahead.

Speakers:

During the panel discussion from 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m., H.E. Mr. Prasad Kariyawasam, Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the United Nations; Mr. Antonio Evora, Political Affairs Officer, Conventional Arms Branch, Department of Disarmament Affairs; and Mr. Mark Marge, UN Office Coordinator, International Action Network on Small Arms, will talk about the results of the UN Programme of Action on Small Arms and Light Weapons, and the remaining challenges ahead.

A question-and-answer period will follow.

At 10.00 a.m., PBS-produced film “Gunrunners” will be screened.
