Gégé Katana

Gege Katana Gégé Katana is a human rights defender, based in Uvira, the Democratic Republic of the Congo. She is the founder and president of the Solidarity Movement of Women Human Rights Activists (SOFAD), an organization that works through a grassroots network of 625 women to research and campaign against sexual violence, and provides counseling and help to rape survivors. Ms. Katana is also a network member of the Global Fund for Women and Coordinator for the Synergie des Femmes Defenseurs des Droits de l’Homme du Sud-Kivu en RDC (SYFEDH). Ms. Katana has been repeatedly arrested, threatened and prevented from travelling during her 25 years as an activist for human rights. Despite the obstacles, she has continued to fight for human rights, which earned her the 2007 Frontline Defender Award.

Gégé Katana is a national of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
