TELL YOUR HUMAN RIGHTS STORIES

Presented by the Outreach Sub-Committee of the 61st Annual DPI/NGO Conference, in cooperation with IDEAL (The Institute for the Development of Education, Arts and Leisure] and B.C. Canada (NGO with special consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations).

When: Wednesday, 3 September, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Thursday, 4 September, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Friday, 5 September, 9:30 a.m. - 11 a.m.


For the first time, the Organizers of the Conference are pleased to present a RACONTEURS’ CORNER, where participants may tell their stories of empowerment, human rights activism and survival. The Raconteurs’ Corner will highlight diverse human experiences, while promoting and honoring individual and community resilience and solidarity. The Raconteurs’ Corner is supervised by Therese Folkes Plair, and is made possible in part by a gift from The Ruth and Seymour Klein Foundation.

Recording of Stories:

  • Storytellers may give their accounts in their mother tongues. They may also bring a partner who would act as an interviewer. Stories should be organized in advance as recording time will be limited to 15 minutes in length.

  • Each story will be recorded on-site.

  • Each participant will receive a recording of their story.

  • A copy of the story will be archived by the United Nations.

  • A selection of stories will be viewed at the conference and may be posted on the website as well.

  • Storytellers are required to sign a legal waiver, permitting use of the material by various sources.

Written Stories:

If you have a story to share, but will not be attending the Conference, or are camera shy, you may submit a 500 word narrative in Microsoft Word or plain text format. Please indicate if you wish to have your story recorded by one of our readers. You may also submit a photograph in electronic format preferably as a jpg or jpeg format.
