      The General Assembly,
 
      Having considered the recommendation contained in Security Council
resolution 1090 (1996) of 13 December 1996,
 
      Appoints Mr. Kofi Annan Secretary-General of the United Nations for a
term of office beginning on 1 January 1997 and ending on 31 December 2001.
