             Appointment of the Secretary-General of the United Nations
 
     The General Assembly,
 
     Acting in accordance with the recommendation contained in Security
Council resolution 589 (1986) of 10 October 1986,
 
     Expressing its appreciation for the effective and dedicated
service rendered to the United Nations by Mr. Javier Perez de
Cuellar during his first term of office,
 
     Appoints Mr. Javier Perez de Cuellar Secretary-General of the
United Nations for a second term of office beginning on 1 January 1987
and ending on 31 December 1991.
