1. At its 40th meeting, on 11 December 1996, the Fifth Committee,
pursuant to rule 153 of the rules of procedure of the General
Assembly, considered the statement by the Secretary-General
(A/C.5/51/39) on the programme budget implications of the draft
resolution entitled "Elaboration of an International Convention to
Combat Desertification in Those Countries Experiencing Serious Drought
and/or Desertification, particularly in Africa", recommended by the
Second Committee in paragraph 8 of its report (A/51/605/Add.1).
2. Statements and observations made in the course of the Committee's
consideration of this item are reflected in the relevant summary
record (A/C.5/51/SR.40).
DECISION OF THE FIFTH COMMITTEE
3. The Fifth Committee decided to inform the General Assembly that,
should the General Assembly adopt the draft resolution recommended by
the Second Committee in paragraph 8 of its report (A/51/605/Add.1), no
additional appropriation would be necessary.
