III. FOLLOW-UP ACTION ON PROPOSALS AGREED TO AT GENERAL
MEETINGS BETWEEN THE UNITED NATIONS SYSTEM AND THE
LEAGUE OF ARAB STATES
Department of Public Information
The Department of Public Information of the United Nations
Secretariat, in cooperation with the United Nations Educational,
Scientific and Cultural Organization, organized a seminar on promoting
independent and pluralistic Arab media at Sana'a from 7 to 11 January
1996. The seminar was hosted by the Government of Yemen and brought
together some 150 journalists, media owners, representatives of
regional press organizations, various media experts and international
observers. The seminar adopted a declaration containing
recommendations to promote and strengthen freedom of the press,
pluralism and diversity in the media of Arab countries. The seminar
was the fourth in a series on the subject of pluralism and freedom of
the press. The Arab States Broadcasting Union (ASBU), a specialized
organization of the League of Arab States, participated in the
seminar.
