Statement by the Presidency of the European Union on
the elections in the Russian Federation, issued at
                             Rome on 18 June 1996

The Presidency of the European Union notes with satisfaction that
the first round of presidential elections in the Russian Federation
has taken place in a free and fair way. This ballot shows that the
majority of Russian electors are in favour of continuing the process
of democratic reforms in the framework of order and social peace. The
Presidency of the European Union will follow the second round with the
same interest, and is determined to maintain and develop its
partnership with the Russian Federation as well as its support for the
reform process.
