        51/317.  Appointment of members of the Committee on Conferences

     At its 87th plenary meeting, on 17 December 1996, the General Assembly,
in accordance with paragraph 2 of its resolution 43/222 B of 21 December 1988,
took note of the appointment by its President, after consultations with the
chairmen of the regional groups, of Chile, Fiji, France, Gabon, Japan, Namibia
and the Russian Federation as members of the Committee on Conferences for a
three-year term of office beginning on 1 January 1997 to fill the vacancies
occurring on the expiration of the terms of office of Chile, Egypt, France,
Gabon, Japan, Pakistan and the Russian Federation.

     As a result, the Committee on Conferences is composed of the following
twenty-one Member States:  Austria,** Bahamas,* Belgium,* Chile,*** Fiji,***
France,*** Gabon,*** Ghana,* Iran (Islamic Republic of),* Jamaica,** Japan,***
Jordan,** Kenya,** Latvia,* Morocco,** Namibia,*** Nepal,** Russian
Federation,*** Saint Vincent and the Grenadines,* Senegal* and United States
of America.**


     * Term of office expires on 31 December 1997.
    ** Term of office expires on 31 December 1998.
   *** Term of office expires on 31 December 1999.
