At its 7th and 8th plenary meetings, on 6 May 1999, the
Economic and Social Council took the following action with regard to vacancies in its
subsidiary and related bodies:
Elections
Statistical Commission
The Council elected the following eight Member States for a four-year term
beginning on 1 January 2000: China, Hungary, Morocco, Pakistan,
Peru, Romania, Uganda and United States of America.
Commission on Population and Development
The Council elected the following nine Member States for a four-year term
beginning on 1 January 2000: Algeria, Belarus, Brazil, France,
Japan, Kenya, Netherlands, Pakistan and Uganda.
Commission for Social Development
The Council elected the following fifteen Member States for a four-year
term beginning on 1 January 2000: Belarus, Benin, Ecuador, France,
Germany, Ghana, Guatemala, Indonesia, Japan, Nigeria,
Peru, Republic of Korea, Russian Federation, Sudan and United
States of America.
Commission on Human Rights
The Council elected the following fifteen Member States for a three-year
term beginning on 1 January 2000: Argentina, Brazil, Burundi, China,
Czech Republic, Ecuador, Germany, Indonesia, Italy, Japan,
Nigeria, Portugal, Spain, Swaziland and Zambia.
Commission on the Status of Women
The Council elected the following ten Member States for a four-year term
beginning on 1 January 2000: Benin, Brazil, Chile, China, Croatia,
Denmark, Dominican Republic, Kyrgyzstan, Malawi and United
States of America.
Commission on Narcotic Drugs
The Council elected the following thirty-three Member States for a
four-year term beginning on 1 January 2000: Angola, Argentina, Austria,
Benin, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Cuba, Czech Republic,
Denmark, Ecuador, Egypt, France, Germany, Greece,
India, Iran (Islamic Republic of), Italy, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan,
Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, Mozambique, Peru, Philippines, Portugal,
Republic of Korea, Slovakia, Sudan, Swaziland, Thailand,
the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, United States of America and Venezuela.
Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice
The Council elected the following twenty Member States for a three-year
term beginning on 1 January 2000: Algeria, Belarus, Belgium, Bolivia,
Canada, Egypt, Jamaica, Japan, Morocco, Nigeria,
Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, Russian Federation, Sierra
Leone, South Africa, Spain, Sudan, Thailand and Tunisia.
Commission on Sustainable Development
The Council elected the following sixteen Member States for a three-year
term beginning at the organizational meeting of the Commissions ninth session in
2000 and expiring at the close of the Commissions eleventh session in 2003: Australia,
Belarus, Bolivia, Greece, Guatemala, Japan, Madagascar,
Mali, Mexico, Pakistan, Poland, Sudan, Thailand,
Uganda, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and United
States of America.
Commission on Human Settlements
The Council elected the following nineteen Member States for a four-year
term beginning on 1 January 2000: Algeria, Barbados, Benin, Colombia,
Croatia, Czech Republic, Germany, Greece, India, Jordan,
Kenya, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Norway, Philippines,
Spain, Sri Lanka and Uganda.
Intergovernmental Working Group of Experts on International Standards
of Accounting and Reporting
The Council elected the following sixteen States for a three-year term
beginning on 1 January 2000: China, Gabon, Germany, Italy, Kazakhstan,
Morocco, Namibia, Panama, Portugal, Russian Federation,
Spain, Sudan, Swaziland, Switzerland, Thailand and United
Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
The Council postponed to a future session the election of two members from
Latin American and Caribbean States and three members from Western European and other
States for a three-year term beginning on 1 January 2000.
Executive Board of the United Nations Childrens Fund
The Council elected the following eleven States for a three-year term
beginning on 1 January 2000: Bolivia, Côte dIvoire, Greece, Guinea,
India, Iran (Islamic Republic of), Italy, Romania, Trinidad
and Tobago, Turkey and United States of America.
The Council decided that:
(a) France, which was to withdraw from the Board effective 31
December 1999, would be replaced by Spain for a term beginning on 1 January 2000
and expiring on 31 December 2001;
(b) Norway, which was to withdraw from the Board effective 31
December 1999, would be replaced by Sweden for a term beginning on 1 January 2000
and expiring on 31 December 2000;
(c) Switzerland, which was to withdraw from the Board effective 31
December 1999, would be replaced by the Netherlands for a term beginning on 1
January 2000 and expiring on 31 December 2001.
Executive Board of the United Nations Development Programme/
United Nations Population Fund
The Council elected the following eleven States for a three-year term
beginning on 1 January 2000: Belgium, Brazil, Egypt, Honduras,
Indonesia, Japan, Netherlands, Russian Federation, Sweden,
Togo and Viet Nam.
The Council decided that:
(a) Canada, which was to withdraw from the Board effective 31
December 1999, would be replaced by New Zealand for a term beginning on 1 January
2000 and expiring on 31 December 2001;
(b) Denmark, which was to withdraw from the Board effective 31
December 1999, would be replaced by Norway for a term beginning on 1 January 2000
and expiring on 31 December 2000;
(c) Spain, which was to withdraw from the Board effective 31
December 1999, would be replaced by France for a term beginning on 1 January 2000
and expiring on 31 December 2000.
International Narcotics Control Board
The Council elected the following six members for a five-year term
beginning on 2 March 2000: Edouard Babayan (Russian Federation), Philip
Onagwele Emafo (Nigeria), Nüzhet Kandemir (Turkey), María Elena Medina
Mora (Mexico), Alfredo Pemjean (Chile) and Zheng Jiwang (China).
Programme Coordination Board of the Joint and Co-sponsored United
Nations Programme on Human Immunodeficiency Virus/Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome
(HIV/AIDS)
The Council elected the following four Member States for a three-year term
beginning on 1 January 2000: Finland, Greece, Mexico and Senegal.
The Council decided that:
(a) Belgium, which was to withdraw from the Board effective 31
December 1999, would be replaced by Luxembourg for a term beginning on 1 January
2000 and expiring on 31 December 2000;
(b) Germany, which was to withdraw from the Board effective 31
December 1999, would be replaced by France for a term beginning on 1 January 2000
and expiring on 31 December 2001;
(c) Spain, which was to withdraw from the Board effective 31
December 1999, would be replaced by the United States of America for a term
beginning on 1 January 2000 and expiring on 31 December 2001;
(d) Switzerland, which was to withdraw from the Board effective 31
December 1999, would be replaced by Sweden for a term beginning on 1 January 2000
and expiring on 31 December 2000;
(e) The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, which
was to withdraw from the Board effective 31 December 1999, would be replaced by Italy
for a term beginning on 1 January 2000 and expiring on 31 December 2000.
The Council postponed to a future session the election of one member from
Asian States for a three-year term beginning on 1 January 2000.
Executive Committee of the Programme of the United Nations High
Commissioner for Refugees
The Council elected Mozambique in accordance with General Assembly
resolution 53/121 of 9 December 1998.
Nominations
Committee for Programme and Coordination
The Council nominated the following twenty Member States for election by
the General Assembly at its fifty-fourth session for a three-year term beginning on 1
January 2000: Argentina, Bangladesh, Brazil, Cameroon, Cuba,
Gabon, Germany, Indonesia, Iran (Islamic Republic of), Italy,
Mauritania, Pakistan, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Republic
of Moldova, San Marino, Ukraine, United Kingdom of Great Britain and
Northern Ireland and Zimbabwe.
Appointments
Board of Trustees of the International Research and Training Institute
for the Advancement of Women
The Council appointed the following three members to the Board for a
three-year term beginning on 1 July 1999: Ana Maria Braga da Cruz (Portugal), Hanan
El-Malki (Syrian Arab Republic) and Jane Nambakire Mulemwa (Uganda).
