ORIGINAL: ENGLISH
COMMISSION ON THE STATUS OF WOMEN
Thirty-ninth session
New York, 15 March-4 April 1995
Item 2 of the provisional agenda*
* E/CN.6/1995/1.
ADOPTION OF THE AGENDA AND OTHER ORGANIZATIONAL MATTERS
Proposed organization of work
Note by the Secretariat
1. The proposed programme of work for the thirty-ninth session of the
Commission on the Status of Women, contained in the annex to the present note,
has been drawn up on the basis of the guidelines annexed to Economic and
Social Council resolution 1987/22, the requirements of the Commission in
undertaking its work as the preparatory body for the Fourth World Conference
on Women: Action for Equality, Development and Peace, and the conference
facilities allocated to the Commission.
2. The proposal takes as its premise that the work on the preparations for
the Conference has the highest priority during the session, but that the other
items on the agenda must be given appropriate consideration.
3. It may be recalled that, under the terms of paragraph 17 of resolution
38/10, adopted by the Commission at its thirty-eighth session, meetings of a
parallel working group were envisaged during the thirty-ninth session. These
additional meetings would be convened, as they were at the thirty-seventh and
thirty-eighth sessions, for the purpose of establishing a working group of the
whole to work on the draft Platform for Action, as well as on other matters
related to the preparations for the Conference. The meetings of the proposed
working group are to take place during the weeks of 20-24 and 27-31 March; an
asterisk (*) indicates that these meetings are being held simultaneously with
plenary meetings.
4. Delegations wishing to make statements under the various items of the
agenda are invited to add their names to the list of speakers as soon as
possible.
5. With regard to the length of statements, it is proposed that a time-
limit of 10 minutes be set for statements on all items.
6. The morning meetings will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The afternoon
meetings will be held from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
