                  GERMAN-INDONESIAN INITIATIVE

   JOINT GERMAN-INDONESIAN EXPERTS' WORKING GROUP MEETING ON "TRADE,
   LABELLING OF TIMBER AND CERTIFICATION OF SUSTAINABLE FOREST MANAGEMENT

      12 - 16 August 1996, Bonn, Germany

-  Description of the issue:
      Concentrating on the impact of certification/labelling on trade,
      market access and the achievement of sustainable forest management

-  Relationship with the Intergovernmental Panel on Forests Programme
   Elements:
      The experts' working group meeting will deal with issues of the IPF
      Programme Element IV, especially the issue of trade and labelling of
      timber; the impact of certification on demand and sustainable forest
      management

-  Expected results:
   -  Progress in the international discussion on the issue of certification
      of SFM and labelling of timber (increase transparency)
   -  Possible options for credible and practical certification/labelling
      systems
   -  Recommendations for the work of the UNCSD IPF on certification and
      labelling issues

-  Expected Date of Completion of the Report and Language:
      End of August 1996 (in English)

-  Process in Pursuing the Initiative:
      25 - 26 January  1996
   -  A preparatory meeting (participants from eight countries and a few
      international NGO's) in Jakarta will refine in a discussion process
      the draft Terms of Reference of the joint experts' meeting in Bonn
   -  Discussion papers to be prepared from various sides to facilitate
      discussion

-  Participants:
      A number of participants that was not excessive could facilitate an
      efficient working group/experts' meeting.  Approximately 50-60
      participants (from 27 countries, international organizations and
      NGO's) might therefore be feasible.
