     ADOPTION OF THE AGENDA AND OTHER ORGANIZATIONAL MATTERS

  Participation of intergovernmental organizations in the work
   of the Open-ended Ad Hoc Intergovernmental Panel on Forests

                     Note by the Secretariat


1.  A request has been received from the Centre for International Forestry
Research (CIFOR) to attend the sessions of the Open-ended Ad Hoc
Intergovernmental Panel on Forests as an intergovernmental organization.

2.  According to rule 74 of the rules of procedure of the functional
commissions of the Economic and Social Council, representatives of
intergovernmental organizations accorded permanent observer status by the
General Assembly and representatives of other intergovernmental organizations
designated on a continuing basis by the Council or invited by the Commission
may participate, without the right to vote, in the deliberations of the
Commission on questions within the scope of the activities of the
organizations.

3.  The Secretariat has reviewed the credentials of CIFOR and recommends
that it be invited to attend the sessions of the Panel as an intergovernmental
organization with the status of observer.
