Paper Cranes

Poetry for Peace Contest

The Poetry for Peace contest was held from 15 September until 14 October 2011. The winners were anounced at a ceremony at UN headquarters in New York.

Below is one of the contest entries.

My Little One

An eerie silence
As my daughter reads me
Her favorite book
A sudden noise
All is red and ablaze
I hear my child scream
But soon all is still
And I cannot find my little one anywhere
All I see is fire and smoke
All I see is the tears as we come
Out of our houses
My little one is gone
Firefighters tell me
Gone
The word echoes in my head
I feel
I see
Nothing
