Below is one of the contest entries.
Let Them Sleep Tonight, let them sleep. They who have stared into the dull eyes of death, They who have seen life dissolve in a breath, Tonight, let them sleep. They who have endured the piercing daggers of pain, They who have lost so much, all without gain, Dear God, let them sleep. They, with faces disfigured and hearts that were shattered, With dreams that were destroyed and bodies that were battered — Tonight, let them sleep. They, haunted by shadows that lurk in every corner, They, taunted by faces that follow the bereaved mourner, Tonight, let them sleep. They, who have crawled through the valley of death and emerged, They, who have seen several roads unite and diverge, Tonight, let them sleep. They, whose souls are heavily burdened with deep despair, Tonight, may they be content; may they be free of care. In peace, let them sleep. Tonight, may they be happier; They, the atomic bomb survivors. Tonight, let them sleep.
