Paper Cranes

Poetry for Peace Contest

The Poetry for Peace contest was held from 15 September until 14 October 2011. The winners were anounced at a ceremony at UN headquarters in New York.

Below is one of the contest entries.

Hope and Remember

A huge, dark cloud covers the sky.
Darts of fire aim towards the land
filled with innocent
men, women and, children.

Piercing screams and
desperate cries
 roam the city of darkness.

The madness finally comes to an end.
The city now silent.
A little girl covered in ashes
sits on a damaged step,
hoping for peace to be
once again restored
hoping that yesterday
would never repeat itself again.

The image of the huge dark clouds
and darts of fire
are forever embedded in
the little girl’s mind.

She carried on her belief...
‘May we forever live in peace.’
