Paper Cranes

Poetry for Peace Contest

The Poetry for Peace contest was held from 15 September until 14 October 2011. The winners were anounced at a ceremony at UN headquarters in New York.

Below is one of the contest entries.

But Everything Turns Away...

My cries howl above the wind
But no one listens
I scream and scream and scream
But my voice only echoes through my head

My body shivers with anxiety
But not a single person in sight to hold me tight
Legs aching, heart pounding, I crawl towards the light
But the light only blinds me away

I pray to god while god is still in my heart
But right now, he doesn’t care to listen
I wait for my angels to lift me up
But today the angels have hid their wings

I stop and lay there for there is no longer hope
But still secretly praying for it to come
I close my eyes for I know there is no point in waiting
But the eyes are scared to be closed today

With closed eyes, again I pray but now to myself
But now god and the angels are here at my side
I remain the same despaired posture, not uttering a sound
But now there is a ray of hope waiting ahead
