Paper Cranes

Poetry for Peace Contest

The Poetry for Peace contest was held from 15 September until 14 October 2011. The winners were anounced at a ceremony at UN headquarters in New York.

Below is one of the contest entries.

The burden that I carry burns a lot

I try to forget the pain that was caused

But the scars on my body remind me of the pain

Day and night ...the haunting memories hover over my head

When I look at the mirror and I see myself

I don't see ugly scars or burns

I see a blessed survivor

Also beautiful

For everyday I look up and hope to see another

Smoke everywhere,

All in the air,

Burned skin

Died people

Who would do this?

Why and where,

Babies abandoned,

Innocent people

Dying for no reason,

Everyone screaming,

Nowhere to hide

What can we do?

What can we do?

Pray, wish for

A better day,

It maybe in

1945, but for me it felt like yesterday

Lost family member

All we say

Sorry
